My 5 Best Websites for Natural Oral Health

My 5 Best Websites for Natural Oral Health

As soon as you start searching for information about oral health on the internet you can quickly become overwhelmed by thousands of choices, most of them fronting small dental practices or large toothpaste manufacturers. Almost all offer the same tired mainstream advice about brushing with fluoride as the best form of prevention.

When you narrow your search down to natural teeth care,  it’s a bit like entering a parallel universe dominated by alt-oral clickbait. You have to navigate through minefields of conspiracy theory and wacky home remedies to find the nuggets of gold.

I try to make sure that the Holistic Tooth Fairy is one of the best websites for natural oral health. If you like this site, you might also like this personal selection of my five favorites:

Healing Teeth Naturally is comprehensive in covering natural, holistic and conventional approaches to oral health in a well-organised manner. The site is all text, few images (except of crystals) and no videos. It’s published in English but translations of some pages are available in German, French, Greek,  Spanish, Slovene and Italian. Ulla Schmid describes her site as ‘humanitarian’  and she isn’t selling anything.

Hippy friendly.

Ora Wellness offers tons of excellent information about natural oral health, and lots of useful but low-fi videos. Will and Susan Revak have developed their own range of natural products for teeth and gums, which I haven’t tried because shipping from Hawai’i to New Zealand is stupidly expensive.

Family friendly.

  • Prevent dental emergencies with teeth & gum nourishing foods, herbs and supplements
  • Protect your gums by fine tuning your oral hygiene habits
  • Relieve jaw tension to avoid breaking enamel or fillings
  • Do your own oral health self assessments to identify any issues
  • Evaluate whether an issue needs a dentist urgently or can wait
  • Manage issues with holistic home remedies until normal dental services resume
Wellness Mama is a natural living website with a smattering of very good blog posts about oral health, including home made toothpaste and toothpowder recipes. Katie Wells is a solid researcher backed by a team, and she has built a substantial business with her natural living blog, books and podcast (while home schooling six children). There’s plenty of valuable free content grounded in her genuine passion for natural teeth healing, just sometimes it’s buried in a mountain of affiliate promotions and advertising.

DIY friendly.

Cure Tooth Decay is the website of the book of the same name (which I reviewed here). The site covers a lot of the same material as the book and is easier to search, though still heavy reading. This website was my first experience of alt-oral, and even before I read the book I was able to prevent a root canal by following the dietary advice I found on the site. The book’s author, Ramiel Nagel, sadly passed away last year, yet I find it slightly creepy that his online bio hasn’t changed since he was alive.

Carnivore friendly.

Any dentist can call themselves ‘holistic’ even if their practice is entirely conventional. Because it’s a coveted search term with no regulation, finding a holistic dentist you can trust can be tricky. When you are searching for a local dentist who is truly holistic, try comparing their website to Evolve Dental.  Not many dentists have a blog as good as Evolve’s but if their services and philosophy are similar (e.g. safe amalgam removal and a dietary approach to prevention), then they are probably genuinely holistic.

‘Looking for a holistic dentist’ friendly

Spiritual Reasons for Gum Disease

Spiritual Reasons for Gum Disease

Understanding the spiritual meaning of gum disease

The spiritual meanings of gum disease symptoms are often overlooked, yet working with these messages often holds the key to effective healing.  Gingivitis, periodontal or gum disease often begins with gum recession or gum pockets, which are variations on the way that gums can separate from teeth.

Physical symptoms for gum disease are influenced by metaphysical factors (spiritual, emotional and psychological) at the cellular level.

The behavior of our gum cells is guided by proteins which carry information, not only from physical influences such as nutrition and environment but also from our subconscious thoughts and emotions.

Communication between our subconscious and our physical body is often very metaphorical. The main role of gums is to hold our teeth in place and support them to be strong and straight.

When you aren’t feeling well supported, the gums can embody that as a metaphor in your mouth.

The Secret Lives of Teeth is a clear and comprehensive guide teaches you a unique, complementary self-help approach to easing toothaches, enhancing enamel and gum remineralization and getting better results with necessary dental treatments.

Teeth are supported by gums

Your gums may be responding to feeling unsupported by people in your life now, or perhaps you didn’t feel well supported by people who were important to you when you were growing up, whether parents or peers. You may be consciously aware of the lack of support, or it may be a subconscious feeling.

Sometimes that feeling goes deeper than your personal experience, into feeling disconnected from the support of the Universe (or God or a Higher Power, whatever you like to call it).

You might feel like the Universe isn’t supporting you, but I believe that those feelings are really the result of the lack of social and economic justice (which hits harder on people of color, women, LGBTQ etc).

We are surrounded by messages telling us that our feelings are personal, even when they are a reasonable response to unreasonable circumstances. Feeling unsupported may be diagnosed as anxiety or depression (and thus blamed on individual, moral weakness rather than racism, sexism, classism and homophobia etc), but it can also be understood as a spiritual malaise.

Any sense of not being supported, whether personally, socially or spiritually, could be contributing to your gum symptoms.

You are worthy of support

This spiritual meaning of gum disease is also associated with lack of trust. If you don’t trust that you are supported  and safe then your gums can undermine the stability of your teeth.

Feeling unworthy is another variation on the lack of support. Feeling unworthy can be the internalization of that sense of not being supported. If you don’t feel worthy of support and particularly if you don’t back yourself to ask for what you need, your gums cause trouble.

The importance of speaking your truth

Another spiritual meaning of gum disease relates to the suppression of strong feelings. If you’re suppressing anger and resentment then your gums may start to retract in response to that.

So one of the solutions is to speak your truth.

Asking directly for the support you need and accepting the support that you deserve, helps to turn stabilize and repair gum symptoms. Speaking up when you are not used to it is very challenging.

Metaphysical healing is not necessarily easy work. In many ways it is much more comfortable to go to a periodontal surgeon and pay many thousands of dollars for painful gum surgery. There’s lots of people who would rather have surgery than have to acknowledge that they don’t feel supported, that they don’t really trust people around them or are suppressing anger and resentment.

Gum problems

Physical remedies

Of course there are physical influences causing gum disease as well, though most of these are almost as rarely acknowledged as the metaphysical causes. Symptoms are usually blamed on not flossing enough but that is too simple an explanation. After all, plenty of people never floss and yet have healthy gums.

Gums do react well to being clean, but they are undermined by aggressive hygiene techniques such as rough flossing, hard bristled toothbrushes and careless dental hygienist treatments. Gums are very sensitive to toxins and traumas so it’s important to clean our gums thoroughly yet gently.

A good balance of minerals in our diet may be the most important factor in gum health. The modern food system is so depleted of nutrients, especially minerals that even people on a healthy, whole foods diet may not be getting enough minerals to sustain their gums through the challenges of life.

Gums are also very responsive to tension in our jaw, so keeping a relaxed jaw plays a big role in gum health.

Healing with spiritual meaning of gum disease

The physical and the metaphysical sit side by side.  It is not enough to focus only on the spiritual, emotional or psychological aspects of healing your gums.

If you are doing all the physical remedies right and nothing’s really changing, or it’s getting worse, then it generally means that you aren’t responding to what your gums are telling you. The metaphysical message behind the physical symptoms is just as important, if not more important, than anything physical that we can do to care for our gums.

Read my new book, The Secret Lives of Teeth, to learn more about how to interpret and apply what your gums are trying to tell you.

Natural solutions for gingivitis or gum disease

Natural solutions for gingivitis or gum disease

What is gingivitis or gum disease?

Gum disease or gingivitis covers a continuum of symptoms such as bleeding gums, gum recession and gum pockets which may or may not proceed to ginigivitis and eventually periodontis.  Left untreated the consequences can range from losing to teeth to heart disease.

Are you looking for natural solutions to managing gingivitis (gum disease) that are aligned with your unique body, history and circumstances?

The holistic approach is gentle, non-invasive and preventative as well as effective at relieving bleeding, stabilizing gum recession and reversing gum pockets.

When you understand the unique combination of factors that influence YOUR gum health, you can stabilize your gums, prevent or reverse gingivitis, and keep your teeth safe without surgery or other dental procedures.

Mainstream dentistry responds to these symptoms and stages with aggressive cleaning to remove bacteria and surgery to repair bone and soft tissue. These procedures are painful, expensive and disempowering.

Gum disease can be caused by any combination of the following factors.

One of these influences alone is  unlikely to cause gum disease.  However, where there are symptoms of gingivits or gum disease it’s likely the result of two or more risk factors accumulating.

External influences on gums

  • toxins in the environment
  • medications causing dry mouth or bone loss
  • amalgam (mercury) fillings
  • root canal toxicity
  • teeth extractions
  • aggressive dental hygienist cleaning
  • poor quality dental procedures
  • wearing braces
  • wearing a night guard for bruxism
  • ill-fitting veneers
  • tongue or lip piercing
  • TMJ disorder
  • teeth grinding and clenching
  • pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • poor brushing technique

It’s probably pretty straightforward to identify what, if any, external factors are influencing your gingivitis or gum disease.

Internal influences on gums

  • mineral deficiency
  • mineral imbalance of phosphorus and calcium
  • A, D, K or C vitamin deficiency
  • stress
  • eating disorder
  • loss of identity
  • fear of visibility
  • suppressed emotions
  • childhood trauma
  • epigenetics (family trauma)
  • past life trauma

It’s not always easy to know what kind of internal factors could be underlying your gum symptoms.

To help identify internal factors that may be causing your gingivitis, ask yourself:

  • Are your symptoms only in one or two parts of your mouth, or are all of your gums affected?
  • Is there a family history of gum disease?
  • Are you on a restricted diet of any kind?
  • Do your gum symptoms flare up more in certain circumstances?
  • Are you living the life you want?

These are the kinds of questions I explore with my clients.

A Quantum Teeth Reading can help you make sense of your symptoms by exploring the emotional, psychological, spiritual or ancestral influences on your oral health.

Natural solutions for gum disease include:

  • removing toxins from your body, diet or environment
  • avoiding aggressive, invasive dental, cosmetic or orthodontic procedures
  • adding minerals to your diet
  • adding vitamins to your diet
  • relaxing your jaw
  • using correct brushing and flossing technique
  • minimising stress
  • enjoying relaxation and pleasure
  • having a sense of purpose
  • releasing old traumas and pent up feeling
