Cure Tooth Decay with Cloud Bread

Cure Tooth Decay with Cloud Bread

How does Cloud Bread cure tooth decay?

(Scroll down for the recipe)

Cloud Bread is a godsend for people seeking to find out how to avoid phytic acid in their diet.  In Cure Tooth Decay, the foundational book about nutrition and teeth health, Ramiel Nagel recommends avoiding phytic acid.  Phytic acid is an anti-nutrient found in grains, nuts, seeds and legumes that undermines the body’s ability to digest and utilize certain nutrients needed to remineralize teeth and regenerate gum tissues and bones

Most people, when trying to avoid phytic acid, find that bread is one of the most difficult foods to do without. Genuine long ferment sourdough has less phytic acid than bread made with yeast, but it still has some.  Gluten-free bread still has plenty of phytic acid, because it is not related to gluten at all.

And so Cloud Bread is a gift for teeth healing because it is made with absolutely no grains, nuts, seeds or legumes.  In fact, it’s ingredients actually support your teeth health. Cloud bread is high in protein from whole eggs and cream cheese. Cream cheese, even when pasteurized, delivers some valuable nutrients for your teeth including Vitamin A and trace minerals. It also contains the valuable pairing of calcium and phosphorus (which are particularly vulnerable to phytic acid).

Versatile Cloud Bread

Cloud Bread appeals to children and adults alike.  It fills the bread-sized gap in your diet, but also can take the place of cake, cookies, crackers, pizza bases or pancakes. You can even use the batter to make waffles.

Cloud Bread is as soft and bland as Wonder Bread, yet it is filling, nutritious and sturdy enough to contain a burger or sandwich. You can butter it without breakage (and butter is great for teeth).

It takes only 3 ingredients, and the recipe is simple- but requires care.  You need an electric beater (or really strong arms to whisk the egg whites stiff). And you have to be careful not to let a drop of yolk contaminate the egg whites. The cream of tartar helps the white to quickly achieve stiff peaks and hold their foamy volume. You need a light hand to fold the yolk mixture into the egg whites so you don’t lose any lightness.

You can sweeten the mixture before you bake it, or dress up plain Cloud Bread with fruit and cream. You can make a rich and savory snack with herbs and cheese stirred in, or sprinkled on top. Basically, the variations are only limited by your imagination!

Cloud Bread Recipe

Ingredients

3 Eggs
3 Tablespoons cream cheese (room temp) or mayonnaise to make it dairy-free
1/4 Teaspoon Cream of Tartar
Optional
Make it sweet with a little stevia, honey or maple syrup to taste
Make it savory with fresh herbs, garlic, turmeric or Parmesan cheese
Preheat oven to 300F/150C
Line a baking tray with baking paper’
Separate egg whites and yolks- being careful to avoid any yolk in the the whites
Beat egg whites and cream of tartar with electric mixer until stiff peaks form.

Mix cream cheese with egg yolks until no cheese is visible. Add any flavorings.
Gently fold yolk mixture in to egg whites
Spoon on to tray to form 9 small buns or whatever shape you like e.g. big slab for a pizza base or wrap.

Bake for 20-30 minutes – the middle will spring back when it’s ready.

Cover and store in the refrigerator.Variation: Use the mixture as pancake batter.

Living teeth need living food

The approach to a teeth healing that I advocate involves getting nutrients in their original context, from eating real food.  The isolated nutrients in supplements, especially when synthesised rather than extracted, lack the complex synergies and the activating qualities available only in whole foods and combinations of foods. These synergies and activating qualities enable our bodies to turn the nutrients we eat into the hormones and proteins that teeth and gums need to be strong and healthy.

Are nuts driving your tooth decay?

Cereals, legumes, nuts and seeds all contain phytic acid which is implicated in both tooth decay and gum recession. People who are genetically or otherwise vulnerable to dental caries and gingivitis should avoid or only consume limited amounts of these foods with careful preparation and accompanied by other nutrients that will aid digestion.

Getting Root Canals

The root canal is a controversial dental procedure yet most dentists continue to recommend root canals without hesitation while other dentists believe all root canals should be removed. I believe that because everyone is unique, with different combinations of genetics, lifestyle, dental history, family histories, personal health, budgets and priorities there can be no simple answer to the question ‘should I get a root canal’. That’s why I’ve developed a checklist designed to help tease out the aspects of your unique situation that may have a bearing on your root canal decision.

Gentle toothbrushing for healthier gums

Gentle toothbrushing for healthier gums

Healthier gums need gentle brushing

In this video I demonstrate how to brush your teeth correctly so that you can clean the enamel thoroughly, without hurting your gums in the process.

Incorrect toothbrushing technique can contribute to receding gums, bleeding gums and even gum disease so brushing the right way does more than just clean your teeth, it protects your gums.

Choosing a toothbrush

Electric or manual, the most important quality is the softness of the bristles. Always choose the softest bristles you can find.

An electric toothbrush will exaggerate the risks of poor brushing technique so I recommend practicing correct brushing with a manual toothbrush before you start using an electric.

Electric brushes are especially valuable for people who have trouble keeping their wisdom or back molars clean.  They are also helpful for people who don’t have enough strength or stamina to brush thoroughly for 2-3 minutes at a time.

No white knuckles

Are you squeezing the toothbrush handle in a death grip? A tight, white knuckled grip at the base of the handle means you are probably brushing too hard!

Practice holding the brush lightly between your finger tips, near the bristles. This way you have more fine motor control.

Don’t scrub

Gently polish each surface of each tooth individually with a gentle flicking motion, moving the bristles away from the gums.

One of the ways that gums are attached to the teeth is with microscopic fibres that can break really easily, so never push the tips of the bristles into the gum line.

To clean the enamel closest to the gums place the sides of the bristles against the gum line, so the tips of the bristles are touching the enamel. Then just wriggle the bristles in place. It will be easier to understand if you watch the video!

Take your time

If this is a new way of brushing for you, take as long as you need to retrain your muscle memory to the new grip and motions of gentle brushing. Even once you have the hang of it, toothbrushing thoroughly and gently should take you at least 2-3 minutes each time.

Rather than resenting and rushing through your oral hygiene every day, treat it as a mini moving meditation where you have a chance to lavish yourself with loving attention.

My 5 Best Websites for Natural Oral Health

My 5 Best Websites for Natural Oral Health

As soon as you start searching for information about oral health on the internet you can quickly become overwhelmed by thousands of choices, most of them fronting small dental practices or large toothpaste manufacturers. Almost all offer the same tired mainstream advice about brushing with fluoride as the best form of prevention.

When you narrow your search down to natural teeth care,  it’s a bit like entering a parallel universe dominated by alt-oral clickbait. You have to navigate through minefields of conspiracy theory and wacky home remedies to find the nuggets of gold.

I try to make sure that the Holistic Tooth Fairy is one of the best websites for natural oral health. If you like this site, you might also like this personal selection of my five favorites:

Healing Teeth Naturally is comprehensive in covering natural, holistic and conventional approaches to oral health in a well-organised manner. The site is all text, few images (except of crystals) and no videos. It’s published in English but translations of some pages are available in German, French, Greek,  Spanish, Slovene and Italian. Ulla Schmid describes her site as ‘humanitarian’  and she isn’t selling anything.

Hippy friendly.

Ora Wellness offers tons of excellent information about natural oral health, and lots of useful but low-fi videos. Will and Susan Revak have developed their own range of natural products for teeth and gums, which I haven’t tried because shipping from Hawai’i to New Zealand is stupidly expensive.

Family friendly.

Wellness Mama is a natural living website with a smattering of very good blog posts about oral health, including home made toothpaste and toothpowder recipes. Katie Wells is a solid researcher backed by a team, and she has built a substantial business with her natural living blog, books and podcast (while home schooling six children). There’s plenty of valuable free content grounded in her genuine passion for natural teeth healing, just sometimes it’s buried in a mountain of affiliate promotions and advertising.

DIY friendly.

Cure Tooth Decay is the website of the book of the same name (which I reviewed here). The site covers a lot of the same material as the book and is easier to search, though still heavy reading. This website was my first experience of alt-oral, and even before I read the book I was able to prevent a root canal by following the dietary advice I found on the site. The book’s author, Ramiel Nagel, sadly passed away last year, yet I find it slightly creepy that his online bio hasn’t changed since he was alive.

Carnivore friendly.

Any dentist can call themselves ‘holistic’ even if their practice is entirely conventional. Because it’s a coveted search term with no regulation, finding a holistic dentist you can trust can be tricky. When you are searching for a local dentist who is truly holistic, try comparing their website to Evolve Dental.  Not many dentists have a blog as good as Evolve’s but if their services and philosophy are similar (e.g. safe amalgam removal and a dietary approach to prevention), then they are probably genuinely holistic.

‘Looking for a holistic dentist’ friendly

Any timezone, any place

A consultation with the Holistic Tooth Fairy is nothing like going to the dentist! It’s easy, empowering and even fun!

All my consultations are done in online video calls which means that you can work with me no matter what country or what time zone you are in.

You can do it in your pajamas!

You can do it in your car!

You can do it lying down or breastfeeding or with a drink in your hand!

You don’t need a babysitter!

Don’t open wide

My recommendations are made in response to the information you tell me about your history, lifestyle and current symptoms so I don’t need to see your teeth (though photos and/or a copy of your most recent x-ray can be helpful).

How to book your video call

First you select your timezone on my calendar, then find a session time that suits you.  If there’s nothing on the first page that fits your schedule, you might need to check my availability a couple of weeks into the future.  I have an alternate calendar available with some extra sessions to suit European time zones.

For a Starter Pack session or a Quantum Teeth Reading you’ll set up payment first by Paypal or credit card, but payment isn’t finalised until you’ve booked a time on the calendar.  For a free 15 minute assessment call, you’ll skip straight to the calendar.

Then you’ll fill in a short questionnaire, about your oral health history and current priorities etc.

Logging in

You’ll receive a confirmation email straight away and two reminder emails (24 hours and 1 hour before your session start time). Make sure you save the time to your own calendar or diary so you don’t forget!

Each of the emails includes the link to login to our online video chat room. If you haven’t used Zoom before, follow the instructions in the first confirmation email to download and install Zoom to your phone or computer in advance.

We both log into our Zoom Room at the agreed time. Make sure your microphone and camera are working.

What happens on the call

In a Starter Pack session we’ll focus on nutrition, jaw relaxation and oral hygiene. In a Quantum Teeth Reading session we focus on emotional, psychological and spiritual healing strategies. If you want a combination of physical and metaphysical recommendations, book the Starter Pack and let me know in the questionnaire that you want a Quantum Teeth Reading included.

With your permission I may record the session for my own reference.

After your call

I’ll follow up within a few days with an email summarizing the strategies we discussed, along with any links, references or recipes I mentioned during the call.

The Starter Pack and Quantum Teeth Reading include a week of email support which means you can ask questions and get answers to help with implementation and interpretation so you’ll start off strong!

Learning to love liver to prevent a root canal

For a genuine super-food, liver gets a very bad rap. Most people, when I recommend liver as a essential teeth and gum healing food, grimace and shudder at thought of eating this most accessible of offal.  However, when I ask if they think they could bear to eat pâté, they will often relax.

Spiritual Reasons for Gum Disease

Spiritual Reasons for Gum Disease

The spiritual meanings of gum disease symptoms are often overlooked, yet working with these messages often holds the key to effective healing.  Gingivitis, periodontal or gum disease often begins with gum recession or gum pockets, which are variations on the way that gums can separate from teeth.

Physical symptoms for gum disease are influenced by metaphysical factors (spiritual, emotional and psychological) at the cellular level.

The behavior of our gum cells is guided by proteins which carry information, not only from physical influences such as nutrition and environment but also from our subconscious thoughts and emotions.

Communication between our subconscious and our physical body is often very metaphorical. The main role of gums is to hold our teeth in place and support them to be strong and straight.

When you aren’t feeling well supported, the gums can embody that as a metaphor in your mouth.

Spiritual Reasons for Gum Disease

Gums support teeth

Your gums may be responding to feeling unsupported by people in your life now, or perhaps you didn’t feel well supported by people who were important to you when you were growing up, whether parents or peers. You may be consciously aware of the lack of support, or it may be a subconscious feeling.

Sometimes that feeling goes deeper than your personal experience, into feeling disconnected from the support of the Universe (or God or a Higher Power, whatever you like to call it).

You might feel like the Universe isn’t supporting you, but I believe that those feelings are really the result of the lack of social and economic justice (which hits harder on people of color, women, LGBTQ etc).

We are surrounded by messages telling us that our feelings are personal, even when they are a reasonable response to unreasonable circumstances. Feeling unsupported may be diagnosed as anxiety or depression (and thus blamed on individual, moral weakness rather than racism, sexism, classism and homophobia etc), but it can also be understood as a spiritual malaise.

Any sense of not being supported, whether personally, socially or spiritually, could be contributing to your gum symptoms.

Trust that you are worthy of support

This spiritual meaning of gum disease is also associated with lack of trust. If you don’t trust that you are supported  and safe then your gums can undermine the stability of your teeth.

Feeling unworthy is another variation on the lack of support. Feeling unworthy can be the internalization of that sense of not being supported. If you don’t feel worthy of support and particularly if you don’t back yourself to ask for what you need, your gums cause trouble.

Speak your truth

Another spiritual meaning of gum disease relates to the suppression of strong feelings. If you’re suppressing anger and resentment then your gums may start to retract in response to that.

So one of the solutions is to speak your truth.

Asking directly for the support you need and accepting the support that you deserve, helps to turn stabilize and repair gum symptoms. Speaking up when you are not used to it is very challenging.

Metaphysical healing is not necessarily easy work. In many ways it is much more comfortable to go to a periodontal surgeon and pay many thousands of dollars for painful gum surgery. There’s lots of people who would rather have surgery than have to acknowledge that they don’t feel supported, that they don’t really trust people around them or are suppressing anger and resentment.

Spiritual Meanings Behind Gum Disease

Complementary physical remedies

Of course there are physical influences causing gum disease as well, though most of these are almost as rarely acknowledged as the metaphysical causes. Symptoms are usually blamed on not flossing enough but that is too simple an explanation. After all, plenty of people never floss and yet have healthy gums.

Gums do react well to being clean, but they are undermined by aggressive hygiene techniques such as rough flossing, hard bristled toothbrushes and careless dental hygienist treatments. Gums are very sensitive to toxins and traumas so it’s important to clean our gums thoroughly yet gently.

A good balance of minerals in our diet may be the most important factor in gum health. The modern food system is so depleted of nutrients, especially minerals that even people on a healthy, whole foods diet may not be getting enough minerals to sustain their gums through the challenges of life.

Gums are also very responsive to tension in our jaw, so keeping a relaxed jaw plays a big role in gum health.

Spiritual meaning of gum disease makes all the difference

The physical and the metaphysical sit side by side.  It is not enough to focus only on the spiritual, emotional or psychological aspects of healing your gums.

If you are doing all the physical remedies right and nothing’s really changing, or it’s getting worse, then it generally means that you aren’t responding to what your gums are telling you. The metaphysical message behind the physical symptoms is just as important, if not more important, than anything physical that we can do to care for our gums.

I work with clients to understand the spiritual meaning of your gum symptoms, and tailor a plan for applying the most appropriate physical and metaphysical strategies to heal them. Join me for a 1:1 Quantum Teeth Reading for an intuitive interpretation of your gum symptoms.
