Cure Tooth Decay- The Bible of nutritional teeth healing

The Miracle of Teeth Healing

Cure Tooth Decay: Heal and Prevent Cavities with Nutrition by Ramiel Nagel (2012) is of the most influential books of my voracious reading life. Not only did it save my teeth from their chronic and rapid decline, but it also cracked open the door that eventually led to my career as the Holistic Tooth Fairy.

I’ve told the story elsewhere of how starting to follow the dietary protocol recommended by Nagel prevented what would have been my 7th root canal, and any cavities since then.

For the past five years Cure Tooth Decay has been my Bible in many ways.

  • There is the miracle of healing my teeth.
  • There is the way I have evangelized the protocol to anyone who will listen.
  • But possibly the most biblical analogy though, is my frequent rereading of my paperback’s well worn pages.

Cure Tooth Decay is difficult reading

Every time I return to the book I learn something new. This is both a testament to the depth and complexity of the information, and a reflection of how poorly organised it is.

I have heard from so many people who struggle with reading it, particularly those trying to follow the Kindle edition and so are unable to flip between chapters trying to make sense and connections.

Five of its 11 chapters explain the dietary protocol recommended to cure tooth decay naturally. Each of these chapters describes the protocol from a different angle, which makes for repetition and a lot of page flicking in the guts of the book.

It is simply not an easy book to refer to when you are trying to figure out what you should and shouldn’t eat, and why.

That is why I’ve written a brief summary of the main principles and most essential foods from Cure Tooth Decay in to a free e-book called Feed Your Teeth which you can download now. One reader called it ‘Cliff Notes’ for Cure Tooth Decay!

Its not all about the food

For the first couple of years I was so focused on trying to understand and implement the dietary protocol that I barely skimmed the rest of the book.

Yet, when I did return to study the other chapters in depth they proved to contain important information to supplement the dietary protocol.  For example, I’ve come to understand that bite and relaxing the TMJ play a major role in teeth and gum health, almost as important as diet.

Hidden in a few chapters of the book are some profound hints about the metaphysical influences on our dental health.

Nagel mentions ‘the hidden need to be sick’, the story that our sore tooth might have to tell if we can listen, the importance of being connected to life and the role of fathers as providing primal nourishment. They are small but significant clues worthy of more discussion.

These kind of esoteric questions are particularly relevant for people whose adherence to the protocol doesn’t cure tooth decay rapidly or conclusively.

Frustrated followers of the protocol debating on Facebook about the exact dosage of supplements could benefit from a closer reading of the book. Of course this means asking some potentially uncomfortable metaphysical questions about dental health.

However, when I coach clients who are struggling with integrating teeth healing nutrition into their diet or not getting results from doing so, there is always an underlying emotional or environmental influence that needs to be addressed.

My dental health was transformed by Cure Tooth Decay and my book-buying life was changed by the Book Depository. They are an online bookstore offering free postage to anywhere in the world (even New Zealand) and I am proud to be an affiliate. That means if you click through on a link in this post and choose to purchase from the Book Depository I may receive a commission. Win-win! Yay!

Living teeth need living food

Living teeth need living food

Living teeth need living food is the foundation of my approach to healing teeth and gum.

This sets the teeth healing diet apart from many systems of eating for health.

It’s more common to label different categories of food as ‘good’ or ‘bad’ on the basis of what nutrients are present or absent in that type of food.

Some of us go gluten-free or vegan. We are ‘naughty’ when we eat chocolate. We are ‘good’ when we drink green juice.

I’m less interested in whether food is good or bad, than I am in the energy that a food brings into your body, and particularly how that energy can support that teeth.

Healthy teeth are constantly being nourished by what we eat.

I think you can eat almost any category of food, as long as the food is nutrient dense, high quality, fresh and prepared appropriately.

That generally means seeking out un-processed organic ingredients to cook yourself.

living teeth living food infographic

Sadly, our industrialized food system has so depleted the quality of most retailed food that eating this way is much harder to achieve than it should be.

I know that in many parts of the world, including some communities in the USA, it can be difficult to find (and afford) high quality fresh food, and so supplementing your diet with pills and powders is the next best solution.

It is normal after all, to take to pills and powders to supply particular nutrients that our symptoms suggest we need.

Our society is so medicalised and pharmaceuticalized (did I just make up a word?) that we routinely pop vitamins, minerals and probiotics instead of being able to trust our meals keep us healthy.

The approach to a teeth healing that I advocate involves getting nutrients in their original context, from eating real food.

The isolated nutrients in supplements, especially when synthesised rather than extracted, lack the complex synergies and the activating qualities available only in whole foods and combinations of foods.

These synergies and activating qualities enable our bodies to turn the nutrients we eat into the hormones and proteins that teeth and gums need to be strong and healthy.

Whole fresh, nutrient-dense, organic food is what your teeth and gums (and the rest of your body) really need to be healthy.

That is not to say that healing your teeth is impossible if you can’t access good food, it is just more complicated.

The holistic teeth healing toolkit that I work with includes a dozen or so different kinds of strategies of which diet is just one.

When your diet can’t heal your teeth effectively, then nutritional supplements come into play, supported by mental, muscular, care, cleaning, dental, emotional and environmental strategies.

Sexy, sacred teeth healing diet

One of the qualities I love about the teeth healing diet (besides the fact that it saved my teeth and thousands of dollars in dental bills) is the abundance of delicious, filling foods that I once considered naughty treats but now prioritize for my health.

Here’s a romantic gesture that doesn’t involve setting sensitive teeth on edge with a box of chocolates. Before sugar became the way to seduce a sweetheart, some of the foods most associated with sexuality, virility and fertility are now recognized as teeth healing. And the most powerful teeth healing foods are those which indigenous cultures called sacred because of their association with fertility, growth and life force.

If you feel like its hard to convince you partner to get on board with ‘healthy’ eating, I’ve put together a tasting menu of savory treats to inspire you and your beloved.

Oysters  are not only a well-known aphrodisiac, like all shellfish they are full of teeth healing fat soluble vitamins and are very high in trace minerals.

Caviar, like all fish eggs, is a great source of teeth healing vitamin D- more by weight than most land animal eggs, meat or organs. Traditionally served with salmon which is another teeth healing powerhouse.

Cheese, especially goat cheese is an excellent source of fat soluble Vitamin A which is essential for teeth healing.  Dairy products in general are teeth healing, especially if raw or fermented (fermented dairy products include cheese, yogurt and kefir).

Steak Tartare, made from very high quality raw tenderloin beef mixed with raw egg is a super teeth healing food because the best way to ensure that your body can assimilate essential nutrients and minerals is when you eat animal protein raw.  If you are worried about intestinal parasites from eating raw meat, just freeze the whole steak for 14 days before you make the dish- which must always be prepared at the last minute.

Fumet or fish head broth; this version of fashionable and uber-healthy bone broth  is particularly associated with virility. Made with carcasses and heads of fish it is rich in fat soluble vitamins and minerals including iodine and calcium. Drink the broth as a light clear soup or use as the base for a chowder or sauce.

You might be able to find a fancy French or tapas style restaurant where these items are on the menu or you can prepare them at home. They’re not difficult to make or serve once you’ve found suitably high quality ingredients (which isn’t always easy in some places).  Your teeth, hearts (and the rest) will thank you!

But what about dessert? Check out this blog post where I introduced my favorite teeth healing sweet treat: the anti-cavity candy also known as yummy gummies.

Healing tooth decay

A holistic approach to remineralize tooth decay is probably quite different from almost all the mainstream dental advice you’ve ever received.

It starts from the principle that the health of our teeth and gums is tied to the health of the rest of our body, in a two way interaction.

In order, to understand holistic teeth healing strategies, you really have to understand how teeth, and the rest of your body, are connected.

Watch the video, or keep reading to understand the mechanics and anatomy of teeth remineralization.

Healthy bodies remineralize tooth decay constantly

In a healthy mouth, nutrients and oxygen are delivered by the blood stream into the root of the tooth, and these nourishing vital fluids pass from inside the tooth out into the enamel by way of 300 yards of microscopic tubules. The tooth’s sponge-like quality means that when everything is working well, your teeth enamel is constantly being renewed from the inside out.  As long as the fluid flow is going from the center of the tooth outwards then tooth decay can be prevented or even reversed.

Tooth decay is a symptom of weak teeth

The fluid flow can impeded by high blood sugar levels, stress, hormonal shifts like pregnancy or adolescence and a lack of certain vitamins and minerals.  When the fluid isn’t flowing outwards, the spongey network of tubules in the enamel suck in the bacteria, toxins and fermentable carbohydrates (old food) from the mouth. That’s what causes decay, inflammation and ultimately toothache.

Decay will only occur if the tooth is vulnerable from the inside. So, holistic teeth healing is a whole body approach aimed at allowing that flow of nutritious fluids into the teeth and supporting the body to express its natural inclination to constantly remineralise.

Foods that prevent tooth decay

Diet is the most important aspect of holistic teeth healing because if your teeth are getting the right nutrients flowing into them, they are amazingly resilient.  I eat lots of animal protein in the form of  grass-fed meat; organ meat especially liver; bone broth, raw dairy, and eggs.  I also eat lots of fresh nutrient-dense vegetables and fruit.  It happens to be an delicious and filling way to eat that has not only transformed my terrible teeth, but also improved my skin, hair and nails.  And my gut is better! I no longer have the tummy troubles that used to plague me for years.

healing tooth decay

Other strategies to help heal tooth decay

The next priority in my hierarchy of holisitic teeth healing strategies is to make sure that your jaw is relaxed so those nutritious fluids can flow freely to the teeth and gums.  TMJ disorder, misaligned bite, or tension in your neck and shoulders can all be contributing to mouth problems by blocking the free flow of fluids to your teeth. Clenching and grinding also puts pressure on the roots and can wear down your tooth enamel. Try

Hygiene is the third line of holistic defense with a lot of botanical and mineral options for cleaning teeth and gums.

Holistic teeth healing can also involve working with your emotions and mindset, genetics and ancestral influences, the energetic body, toxins in the environment and in your body, and dental relationships including anxiety and trauma. These are almost always the underlying issues that need to be addressed.

A holisitic approach to remineralize tooth decay is probably quite different from almost all the mainstream dental advice you’ve ever receive.

Sugar-free sweetness

Why is sugar so bad for teeth?

A teeth healing diet is full of delicious food options, but sweetness is not its main flavour.

Everyone knows that sugar is bad for your teeth, though its a well-kept secret that the reason sugar causes cavities is not what most people think.

Rather than the sugar in your mouth causing plaque to create cavities its the sugar in your blood stream upsetting the natural processes of remineralisatoin.

When our blood sugar levels are elevated the body isn’t able to manufacture the hormones and proteins that naturally and continuously remineralise teeth.

Sugar is everywhere.

It hides discreetly in almost every single packaged and processed food.

But of course it’s out flaunting itself as well, in bakery cabinets, birthday parties, convenience store refrigerators and almost everywhere else you look.

And because sugar is addictive, the flaunted sugar is often hard to resist, even when you are being vigilant about avoiding the hidden sugars in mayonnaise, pasta sauce or bread.

Teeth healing diet

One of my principles of holistic teeth healing is that you can start to heal your teeth by adding helpful foods before you start removing the unhelpful foods, so I don’t advocate that sugar addicts have to give up all sugar in order to heal your teeth.

But cutting back on refined sugar is definitely a good idea, and if you have already embraced a sugar-free life, your teeth are thanking you for it.

Sometimes when you need a sweet treat to share with children or to feed the child within, its good to have an option with no fructose, minimal glucose and as much tooth healing goodness as you can squeeze in. And that’s where the magic of gelatin (or gelatine) comes into its own.

anti-cavity candy

Gelatin- an anti-cavity secret!

Gelatin is a concentrated teeth healing food, equivalent to bone broth in its delivery of protein and minerals.  I’m not talking about jello, which is mostly sugar, but the plain unsweetened gelatin powder, ideally sourced from grass-fed, organically cattle.  This good quality gelatin is more difficult to find- I have to order mine online- and much more expensive than the regular plain gelatin sold in my supermarket. But oh, the things that it will do for your teeth.

My favourite way to consume gelatin is as teeth healing gummies.   There are infinite variations to satisfy every kind of sweet craving. For this demonstration I used  some of the glut of homegrown plums and whole, heavy, summer-grass-fed cream for a double whammy of teeth healing goodness.  You can use whatever you have available.

Anti-Cavity Candy Formula

Rather than giving a recipe, I’m sharing the formula so you can change it up to suit your taste and what’s available.

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups of fruit and liquid in any proportion and combination

  • Suggestions for fruit: plums, peaches, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, cherries, apples, pears, mango, etc. Kiwi, pineapple and most citrus are too acidic to set well (and are hard on the teeth).
  • Suggestions for liquid: cream, milk, coconut milk, kombucha, kefir, yogurt, herbal tea, green tea, water, left over smoothie, fresh vegetable or fruit juice etc

3 1/2 tablespoons of high quality gelatin dissolved in 1/2 cup fluoride-free cold water

1/2-2 tsp of optional sweetener

  • Suggestions for optional sweeteners: raw honey, organic maple syrup, stevia

Method

Heat fruit and liquid slowly until hot but not boiling, then cool slightly and blend, mash or mouli til smooth.

Dissolve gelatin into cold water and let it sit 5 minutes then stir to break up the gel into small lumps.

Add the gelatin into the warm fruit mixture and stir until smooth.

Pour into molds or a shallow container and leave to set in the refrigerator for 2 hours. Keeps in the refrigerator for up to a week.
